Sal Barcia, President/CEO
Sal Barcia is CEO and President of Meta Healthcare IT Solutions, LLC a highly regarded software company based in Garden City, NY. Since he co-founded the company in 1991 with Eric Gerstenfeld, Barcia has overseen its growth into a dynamic EHR vendor from the ground up. Meta now provides a suite of integrated software products for multiple healthcare sectors, serving acute care, long term care, addiction recovery, and behavioral health facilities in the United States and Canada.
Holding a B.S. and M.S. in Pharmacy from St. John’s University, Barcia has spent over twenty years as a leader and innovator in healthcare IT. After developing the first undergraduate-level course on pharmacy automation at his alma mater, Barcia worked in system analysis, coding, and project management in the pharmaceutical industry. He then spent five years overseeing all aspects of pharmacy automation at a highly regarded medical center in New York City before working as director of development, implementation, and marketing for a New York City based healthcare solutions provider. In this final position, Barcia met and collaborated with Gerstenfeld to develop a pharmacy information system for that firm.
As an executive with a clinical background, Barcia has been focused on Meta’s development of software that improves patient outcomes, reduces medical risk, and increases productivity. He strongly believes that EHR software should be affordable to health enterprises and provide a solid return on their investment. As such, he is a strong voice for making sure that Meta clients receive an excellent value in both the products and services that the company offers.
A Queens native, Barcia presently resides on Long Island, New York with his wife and family. He is a strong supporter of Catholic secondary education, as well as local charities. His sports passions are the Mets and St. John’s basketball, which he shares with his wife and children.
Eric Gerstenfeld, Executive Vice President/CTO
Eric Gerstenfeld is Executive Vice President and CTO of Meta Healthcare IT Solutions, LLC and is one of the two founding partners of the company with Sal Barcia. Gerstenfeld has lead Meta successfully through four pharmacy conversions, writing more than seventy percent of the initial one himself. Meta also passed certifications for ARRA Stage 1 and ARRA Stage 2 under his capable leadership. He currently supervises all of the technical staff and project managers; he initiated and has been deeply involved in all eMAR, CPOE and clinical documentation development in MetaCare Enterprise Rx.
Prior to Meta Healthcare IT Solutions, Gerstenfeld worked for a highly regarded New York hospital as an application programmer/analyst. After three years, Gerstenfeld left to work for a hospital software vendor where he took part in system integration, implementation and interfacing as well as project management. He eventually became the lead analyst and lead programmer for their mainframe-based PCS-ADS pharmacy software product and went on to help hire and work with Sal Barcia. When IBM discontinued support of PCS-ADS, Gerstenfeld together with Barcia branched out to start a new company and began building a pharmacy product from the ground up.
One of the most important ideals Gerstenfeld has learned in this field has been from Barcia: build the best product you can and the rest will fall into place.
Gerstenfeld has a B.A. in Sociology from the City University of New York. He is a self-starter and has been involved in a number of diverse startup businesses. He has also been a co-director since 1992 of a non-profit organization which facilitates and helps to run educational and experiential activities both locally and internationally. Gerstenfeld is an avid reader and has a love of composing original music.
