MetaCare Event Manager™ Solution Pushes EHR Innovation into the New Decade
Meta recently announced the release of MetaCare Event Manager™, an integrated solution within two MetaCare Enterprise™ EHR applications, MetaCare CPOE™ and MetaCare eMar™. With a dynamic event scheduler in which clinicians are able to create and receive alerts for patient care tasks, MetaCare Event Manager breaks through the gates of “traditional” EHR clinical decision support.
With
MetaCare Event Manager, hospital post-op procedures that are cumbersome
to order and arrange can now be set with a few clicks of a button.
Also, events can be set to trigger based simply on a real-time update of
the patient’s condition. Through use of MetaCare Event Manager, a
patient in pain is not overlooked. In MetaCare CPOE, MetaCare Event
Manager can be used to create and edit at the physician level, allowing a
doctor to order a specific function to be performed by a nurse at a
specific time. In MetaCare eMAR, MetaCare Event Manager allows
administrative users to establish particular “follow-up” forms at the
item level to require nurses to re-assess a patient after a particular
medication administration.

Meta’s Tools and Tips
Barcode Scanning Compliance Icon
Do You Know Your Compliance Rates?
Once
you’ve adopted bar-coding solutions, how do you measure its efficacy?
Better yet, is your nursing staff adapting to the workflow changes
successfully? Using MetaCare eMAR, bar-code compliance icon and
reporting, compliance can be easily viewed at the bedside and during
administrative auditing. Here is a quick tip on how you can know your
bar-code compliance:
Several
Barcode Scanning Compliance Reports are available to monitor and assess
the barcode scanning compliance rates of the facility, at the Nursing
Station level as well as the User level. To help the User easily
to assess their compliance status, a Bar-code scanning compliance Icon
is located directly below the SAVE icon on the Medication Administration
Form.
By observing the background color of the barcode icon, the User will know if they are in Full, Partial, or Non-Compliance.
White: Full Compliance – Patient Armband and Med were both Scanned
Pink: Partial Compliance – Patient Armband was Scanned, but Med was NOT Scanned
Yellow: Partial Compliance – Patient Armband was NOT Scanned, but Med was Scanned
Red: No Compliance – Patient Armband was NOT Scanned; Med was also NOT Scanned
Don’t have bar-coding point-of-care medication administration yet? This is the perfect time to call Meta for more information!

MetaCare IntelliDocs eForms Cuts Time in
Clinical Documentation
Meta is introducing new eForms features in its MetaCare IntelliDocs clinical documentation solution. Through
the new features, user-defined eForms can be grouped together based on
care areas, eliminating the chance of missing required patient
forms.
Our
entire MetaCare EHR suite replaces manual systems with forms that are,
often times, unrecognizable to end user clinicians. Our IntelliDocs
eForms generator resolves this issue directly by creating powerful data
collection forms that not only look and feel familiar to clinicians but
contain powerful features that improve both productivity and patient
care. As with the other products in our MetaCare Enterprise EHR suite, MetaCare IntelliDocs can be integrated with any of our solutions.
MetaCare
IntelliDocs eForms work for clinicians from the moment a patient walks
into a facility to when they recover and beyond. With patient safety goals in mind, Meta works to reduce the chance for errors by cutting out redundant data entry all together.

Lafayette Surgical Specialty Hospital
Selina Guidry, RN, MS, FACHE
A 20-bed physician-owned hospital located in the southern Louisiana city of Lafayette,
Lafayette Surgical Specialty Hospital (LSSH) has experienced the
effects of natural disasters such as the recent oil spill, Hurricane
Katrina and, less than a month later, Hurricane Rita. In the time around
these hurricanes, the hospital became an emergency hub for thousands of
people, many of whom relocated to Lafayette
to reside after the storms. During Hurricane Katrina, Selina Guidry, RN,
MS, FACHE, Vice President of Patient Care Services for LSSH, acted as
medical commander.
“I
was on standby, waiting for around 200 evacuees to arrive at LSSH via
helicopters,” explained Guidry. “Not long before we were expecting them
to land, the Federal government made a decision not to evacuate anybody
south of the border within Louisiana. Even so, we acted swiftly to prepare to help any patients we could.”
LSSH recently received designation from Modern Healthcare
as one of the “Best 100 Places To Work,” an award that displays the
hospital’s vision of providing the best and safest quality of patient
care. According to Guidry, “Louisiana‘s
mindset is that life is wonderful. There is a nurturing culture and a
positive environment. LSSH fits those ideals as a very patient and
family-oriented community.”
As
someone who has had experience with the go-live of the clinical side of
a large IT system of HBOC, Guidry believes the key principle in IT
implementation is maintaining and sustaining the culture. She also
suggests that it is a matter of making sure everyone is on the same page
and finding the perfect fit for the exciting hospital culture despite
bringing in new staff members and training.
“My
advice for nurses and future nurses is to equip yourself with a good
nursing education,” stated Guidry. “Take every opportunity and volunteer
for what’s needed. It isn’t enough to just do the minimum of what is
required or asked. There is a calling in the community for great
nurses.”
Guidry
recalls the many patients that have touched her life and the countless
families who have opened up their hearts to her during their time of
healing.
“Nursing
is a wonderful profession,” continued Guidry. “Women have different
needs at different times, such as being able to work weekends when
raising children or tending to family obligations. Nursing is
ever-changing and quite flexible. It is the hardest work any person can
do in terms of physical, mental and emotional stress, but it is just as ,
if not more, rewarding.”
In
her spare time, Guidry enjoys attending her grandchildren’s sporting
events, growing tomatoes, cucumbers and flowers and making big Sunday
dinners for her large family.
Guidry
has been at LSSH for nearly seven years and, in addition to 22 years of
experience in nursing administration, worked as a registered nurse for
more than forty years in a large yet rural hospital setting. A Fellow of
the American College of Health
Care Executives (ACHE), from which she received the 2008 Senior Regent’s
Award, she is also a member of the LSUE Nursing Program Advisory
Committee, the Louisiana State Nurses Association and various other
organizations.
